Locate Your Backcountry Camp

Many of us dream about the great outdoors and think about getting away for a weekend by planning a trip into the great outdoors. There is so much to think about as you need to be sure that you are safe and enjoy this trip to the maximum. The location for your backcountry camp is very important as you will be spending a great deal of time there in relation to the overall length of your adventure. Before you set out in the morning make sure that you have a clear picture of what you need as you do not want to be stressing yourself as dusk is quickly falling.

Planning is everything when you're looking for a successful wilderness adventure. Set out first thing in the morning so you give yourself plenty of time to deal with all these issues at the end of the day.

If you have found a great area of flat ground for your backcountry camp location, this is only the first step. You do need to look up and around you to see that you are not in danger from any falling objects, such as loose branches or rocks which may become dislodged in the middle of the night and give you a rude awakening.

Water is always your friend when in the great outdoors and many people choose to erect a backcountry camp near to running water as it can be very soothing when they are trying to sleep. In addition, you can use it for washing and for boiling. Don't forget that you should not set up a camp in a floodplain at any time, as even though it may not be raining where you are, sudden torrential storms far upstream can cause flash flooding at your location and many campers have found this to their cost in the past.

If you have not conducted extensive research about the area you are traveling to, you should be careful that mountain lions, bears or other wild animals do not frequent. When setting up your backcountry camp, be on the lookout for evidence of these animals, such as large footprints and move on if you find them.

Use some common sense when you are setting a fire to help you enjoy your overnight camp. Firstly you should be sure that there is a lot of loose wood so that you can build one efficiently, but do make sure that you do not set it near to any dense undergrowth which could catch fire and cause a big problem.

You will need a certain amount of gear and equipment to sustain you as you head out on a camping or hiking expedition. Most of the stuff inside your backpack you will need for your backcountry camp, so make sure that you plan correctly and include everything that you will need.
